Vision for The Refuge
With few resources and cultural barriers, many people in vulnerable places, such as refugees, get “stuck” in life in America. Many have grown up in very challenging circumstances. As it has taken a long time to develop wounds, it can take a long time to heal. Unfortunately, refugees are often placed in communities where the vulnerable are often overburdened with crime, joblessness and poor performing schools. Jobs given to refugees are often not suited to their culture, gifting, experiences and passions.
Alternatively, living in healthy communities provides avenues for better jobs, schools, community care and sustainability. There is a need to go deeper with refugees to get them to a place of spiritual renewal and greater self-sufficiency.
For the past 20 years, Tiffany and I have had a personal mission for the most unreached, vulnerable and outcast to experience abundant life in a relationship with Jesus. Following our first cross-cultural ministry in the Czech Republic in 1995, we spent six years gaining cross-cultural ministry experience and ministry education. For seven years, ministry in Kazakhstan and mobilizing cross-cultural workers was the avenue for the calling on our hearts. Friends of Refugees was the avenue of our calling for another seven years. In 2015, God moved us again.
With a passion for people to know the transforming power of the love and grace of God and the understanding that people can best do that in healthy communities, we started The Refuge.
Our heart for this ministry is to empower families for abundant life in a relationship with Jesus.
God has affirmed over and over His voice, “I am with you.” Many times I have had very similar conversations with God that Moses had with Him (Exodus 3 personalized):
The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Sudan, Bosnia, Burma, Bhutan, Somalia…I have heard them crying out because of their hardship, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them and bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey.”
But Scott said to God, “Who am I that I should bring your people to a new land.”
And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be a sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out to the new land, you will worship God there.”
As He has been with us through the years, He is still with us. We appreciate your prayers as we move forward with The Refuge.
