The Lord is My Refuge

Psalm 91

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.”

Surely he will save you from harm.
 He will cover you with his feathers,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness will be your shield and fortress.

You will not fear…

If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
    and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you,
    no disaster will come near your home.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not be harmed.

14 “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
    I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble,
    I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.”

Family Focus – Life Change

This is a true story; we changed or omitted personal details to protect “John”.   We’ve known John and his family for seven years.

John’s parents fled their country because of religiously motivated war.  In the pursuit to take over the land of John’s people group, the majority religious group killed and tortured John’s people.  So John’s parents fled to a refugee camp in a nearby country and eventually made it to America.   John was a young child when they came to America.   But like most refugees, while life in America meant a safer life, it did not mean an easier life.

Scott and Tiffany met John and his family when John was 9.  Over the years, John’s parents had trouble becoming enculturated in the urban life in which they were thrust.  They had trouble fitting in, having success and finding jobs.  They did not know how to help their kids succeed in life.  Exasperated, John’s mom once told Tiffany, “I do not know how to raise my kids here.”   Scott started tutoring and mentoring John when John was 11 and has continued to do so for five years now.  As John entered the teen years, John became angry and rebellious and did poorly in school.   During this rebellious stage, John was distant, disrespectful and rude to many, including Scott.   But Scott felt like God wanted us to persevere with John.

We continued to love on, pray for, counsel and mentor John.  And we continued to love on John’s family.  At one point, Scott was a part of a Bible study with John’s dad.   Over time, John got involved in a meaningful Bible study with other youth, got actively involved in church and eventually made a commitment to Christ!  John was baptized this past summer.  This past fall, John expressed an interest in having a career that makes a difference, maybe even a missionary – and even possibly back in his home country!!    This type of life change took five years of investing in the lives of John and his family.  This is one of many reasons we wanted to focus more on families.  We will continue to love on John and his family and many other kids and families.  We do so because our mission is families experiencing abundant life in a growing relationship with Jesus.  This is why we do what we do.

Old Fashioned Saves Money

We like helping people save time. We are setting up our online donation portal so giving is more convenient. But we also like people saving money. And, due to credit card processing fees, writing and mailing an old fashioned check puts more of your money into making a difference. So thank you for taking the time to write a check! There are currently two ways to give:

1) Mail a check to Red Sea, PO Box 544, Waleska, GA 30183. Please put “The Refuge” in the memo line.
2) Set up a recurring bill pay through your bank payable to Red Sea, PO Box 544, Waleska, GA 30183 with the account “The Refuge”.

Thank you!!

The Refuge launches its new website

Welcome to The Refuge’s website. We are a non-profit organization meant to bring refugees (persons who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster) from other nations to here in Cherokee County, GA. In doing this we desire to be the light of Christ by not only meeting their physical needs but also their spiritual one needs.
